8/13/2015 Paradise Fire Update

Paradise Fire Update - Thursday, August 13, 2015
2425 Acres
Recent lightning strikes have ignited fires all over the northwest and Canada. Smoke from these fires is carried in the upper level winds for hundreds of miles. The smoke that is currently impacting the peninsula has been tracked from as far away as southeast Oregon. To see the most up to date weather patterns that are transporting the smoke, check out http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/Products/land/fire.html or http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/sat_west.html

The sprinkler system continued to dampen the area to the west of Bob Creek yesterday. The Type 2 DNR helicopter dropped buckets on the fire for one fuel cycle before it was sent to assist with the new Cabin Creek Fire on the Olympic National Forest. The Type 3 helicopter shuttled crews to the Paradise Fire and assisted the Forest with a recon after a lightning storm came through the area.

Scouting the area to the northwest of the fire perimeter will continue with the assistance of the Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The helicopters will continue bucket drops and crew transports as needed. If needed, the helicopters will be made available to assist with new fires on the peninsula. Crew members will work to improve and extend the sprinkler system as more supplies arrive.

There were 259 new fires around the nation yesterday, 88 of them were in the northwest. The national situation report is updated daily with the priority fires and their statistics, https://www.nifc.gov/nicc/sitreprt.pdf.  Canada's national wildland fire situation report is available at http://cwfis.cfs.nrcan.gc.ca/report.

Fires are not permitted in the backcountry area of Olympic National Park, including coastal areas.  Campfires are only allowed in established front-country campgrounds in metal campfire rings.
