9/01/2014 Deception Complex Fire Update

Fire Information Line: 541.782.5359

Happy Labor Day! The community of Oakridge and the surrounding forest is open to recreationists with the exception of the closure order associated with the Deception Complex. We invite you to come enjoy the beautiful fall weather on the Willamette National Forest. The Waldo Lake Wilderness Area closure on the Willamette National Forest has been lifted.

A community meeting to provide a fire update is scheduled at Green Waters Park in Oakridge at 7:00 p.m. tomorrow.

Local communities and surrounding areas can expect to see smoke in the next couple of days associated with planned burnout operations. This strategy will strengthen containment lines for the Deception Complex while keeping firefighter and public safety a top priority.

Two new smoke monitors are now in place at Middle Fork Ranger Station and Dexter in addition to the smoke monitor in Oakridge; information from the monitors is incorporated in the daily Deception Complex smoke forecast which is posted at www.oregonsmoke.blogspot.com

Starting at midnight tonight, the closure order for the Deception Complex will be adjusted. The Larison Trail will be opened and the Patterson Road (Forest Road 5840) will be closed. The rest of the closure order will remain in place.

Fire managers are working closely with local natural resource advisors to identify helispots, drop points, weed wash operations, and suppression repair standards to keep any impacts associated with the suppression operations to a minimum.

Motorists traveling Highway 58 are advised to proceed with caution near the community of Oakridge today due to increased traffic association with holiday travelers, hunters and fire equipment working on the Deception Complex.

Deception Creek Mobile Home Park, Middle Fork Ranger Station and houses along La Duke Road remain under a Level 1 evacuation notice.
Deception Complex Operations Summary:

Today on the N/NE flank of the Deception, crews, engines and heavy equipment are working along Forest Road 5847 to improve fire line and further establish a contingency line. On the E flank, firefighters are mopping up and constructing contingency fire line N on the ridge E of Forest Road 5850, utilizing equipment and hand crews. Crews will also continue to mop up on direct line in the area. On the SE flank, crews, engines and water tenders will improve fire line on Forest Road on the 5850, conducting a burnout if necessary. On the S flank, crews, engines and a chipper will continue to improve line and clean up slash along the 5850 Road. On the SW flank, crews, engines and falling modules are holding and improving line and firing, if necessary. Firefighters are also preparing Forest Road 1714 for burnout.

On the Pool Creek Fire, the fire is transitioning to aerial patrol. On the Davey Fire, crews, engines and heavy equipment continue to mop up, utilize Palm IRs to detect residual heat, patrol and start rehab on dozer lines.

On the Staley Fire, firefighters are monitoring fire activity along the ridge and upper slope and will continue to prep alternative control lines. A heavy duty sprinkler system is being utilized cool fire as backs towards the line. Crews will continue to patrol, mop up and secure perimeter utilizing palm IR from the 332 Road down to and along the 300 Road.

Deception Complex: Started: August 12, 2014 Cause: Lightning Location: Two miles west of Oakridge, Oregon.

SAFETY CONCERNS: Driving hazards, including increased traffic along Highway 58, wildlife in the area, smoke and poor visibility, depending on fire and burnout activity.

RESOURCE CONCERNS: Threatened and endangered species, including northern spotted owls and bull trout; timber resources, impacts to recreation opportunities, threatened communities of Oakridge and Westfir, municipal watershed of Westfir.

WEATHER: Monday mostly clear with temperatures mid to high 70s.  Humidities ranging from 25-35% and winds on ridgetops NW 3-5 mph in the morning increasing to 6-9 mph in the afternoon.  Tuesday will be partly cloudy with increasing clouds in the evening.  Expect slightly cooler temperatures and increased humidity on Tuesday as moisture moves in ahead of the approaching cold front.  The front is timed to move south across the area late Tuesday night, with the main effect being gusty W-NW winds.  No measurable precipitation is anticipated with the frontal passage.

TODAY'S EXPECTED FIRE BEHAVIOR: Fire behavior will be fairly minimal; expect today to be a good drying day. Steep slopes will continue the threat of "rollouts". Isolated torching is possible if surface fuels have pre-heated under the canopy. Surface fuels continue to consume through the night. Most of the fires in the entire complex have burned in a mosaic pattern. While this pattern is natural, it can be dangerous for firefighters because the potential for fire to rapidly run through green "stringers" of vegetation is present.
