8/8/2014 Staley Complex Update

Staley Complex
Willamette National Forest

080714 Update:

On Thursday afternoon, members of Rocky Mountain Interagency Incident Management Team A (Type 2) arrived to shadow with members of the Southern Cascades Type 3 Team. The Rocky Mountain Team will take command of the Staley Complex Fires on Friday morning. “Given the complexity of the fires, number of personnel engaged in firing operations in difficult terrain, and forecasted lightning next week, regional and forest fire managers decided to bring in additional resources from outside the region,” said Darren Cross, Acting Middle Fork District Ranger. “This will free up local fire resources to respond to any new lightning and human caused fires. Given how many resources are already committed across the region, it is incredibly important for forest visitors to be vigilant and make sure that all fires are dead out,” Cross added.

Today’s Activities: Crews are continuing to construct and strengthen indirect fireline for planned burn out operations in the days ahead. Helicopter water drops continue to be used to check the spread of the Staley and Davey Fires.

Weather and Fire Behavior:  Fire activity is increasing as a gradual warming and drying trend seen in recent days continues. The National Weather Service is forecasting a possible multi-day lightning event that could begin as early as Sunday.

Closures:  A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) is in effect restricting civilian aircraft from using the Oakridge airport due to fire related helicopter traffic.  Road and Area Closures are being planned for the area surrounding the Staley Complex.

Future updates will be provided as conditions change.
