8/16/2014 5 Mile and Somers Fire Update (8 p.m.)

The Somers Fire, located 15 miles east of Imnaha, has been mapped at 35,917 acres and is 50 percent contained.  Acreage increased due to more accurate mapping of the southern portion of the fire.

The 5 Mile Fire, located one mile south of Imnaha, has been mapped at 4,524 acres and is 95 percent contained.   This is the last daily update for the 5 Mile Fire due to limited fire activity and demobilization of resources.

While today was warmer and drier, the Somers Fire has experienced rain over the past two days and fire behavior has moderated, although today there was an increase in smokes on the line today.

Firefighters made progress by building direct handline on the southern and northern portions of the fire, building direct and contingency lines on the western portion of the fire and mopping up on eastern portion of the fire.

373 personnel are assigned to the Somers Fire.

Recreationists in the area are reminded of the road closure at Hat Point Road and that no camping is allowed on the Oregon side of the Snake River.  In addition, visitors should be cautious of heavy fire traffic in the area.
