On the Somers Fire, today's efforts will include continuing to build direct handline on the southern and northern portions of the fire, continuing to build direct and contingency lines on the western portion of the fire and preparing structures and mopping up on eastern portion of the fire.

Somers fire resources currently assigned include:  two Type 1 crews, three Type 2 crews, five engines, one dozer, nine water tenders, one jet boat, one Type 1 helicopters, two Type 2 helicopters, two Type 3 helicopters and two air attack platforms.

On the 5 Mile Fire, today's efforts will focus on monitoring and patrolling.  5 Mile resources currently assigned include:  one Type 2 crew and five engines.

To reduce travel time and increase time suppressing the fire, most firefighters are spiked out closer to the Somers Fire.

While today is expected to warmer and drier, the Somers Fire has experienced between ¼ to ½ inch of rain over the past two days.  A computer model has shown that more than ¼ inch of rain in the local fire areas will moderate fire behavior for up to four days.

"We plan on taking advantage of the window of opportunity that weather offered us to focus on critical areas of the fire," said Deputy Incident Commander Chris Wilcox.
