8/8/2014 Lone Mountain 1 Fire Update

Lone Mountain 1 Fire

               Friday, August 8, 2014

The Lone Mountain 1 Fire is still putting out smoke, but it has not made a strong run since August 1, when it increased about 345 acres.  East winds on Saturday may push some of that smoke down canyon and into Stehekin.

"We're feeling fairly confident that the fire can be held within the control points we've established," said Incident Commander Corky Conover. "That doesn't mean there won't be smoke, but we're hoping to continue holding it in the upper elevations."  To that end, the Unaweep wildland fire module will be hiking up Boulder Creek from Stehekin today and establishing a spike camp in a safe area not far from the fire's edge.  Helicopters plan to sling in pumps and hoses to assist firefighters in direct attack near the creek bottom.

The fire was spotted July 14.  In the ensuing weeks, firefighters have kept the flames away from the Stehekin community in North Cascades National Park and out of the War Creek drainage on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest.

The Lone Mountain 1 Fire is growing slowly and today is at 2,436 acres, mostly burning trees or islands of fuel amongst the rocks inside the main fire area.  The perimeter has expanded a little on the west between Rennie Creek and the unnamed tributary to Boulder Creek.  The fire is three miles away from Stehekin, up the Boulder Creek drainage and on northeast side of Purple Mountain.

Four helicopters and 75 people are dedicated to making sure that the fire doesn't move down the Boulder Creek drainage or east up over the ridgetop.  The Boulder Creek Trail is closed but all other services and recreational opportunities remain available in Stehekin.
