8/10/2014 Staley Complex Fire Update

Crews continue to construct indirect and contingency lines despite significant operational challenges including: steep, rugged terrain, long travel times (>1.5 hour hike to fires) and a risk of incomplete consumption (dirty burn) during firing operations. "The most active part of the Staley Fire is a southwest facing slope on the south side," said Ron Klatt, Field Operations. "Efforts are also being focused on the east side where the fire is moving in an upslope, up-valley direction," Klatt added.

Today's Activities: Crews will be pursuing opportunities for indirect and direct fire suppression on the Davey Fire. Helicopters are continuing to drop water to check the spread of both fires.

Weather and Fire Behavior: The combination of an unstable atmosphere (Haines 5) and warmer, drier conditions are contributing to increased fire activity. The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning and is forecasting a multi-day lightning event starting Sunday afternoon.

Road and Area Closures are in effect for Forest Service roads surrounding the Staley Complex: Portions of Forest Roads 2134, 2154 and 2143 are closed. The fires are located 28 miles south of Oakridge. There are no impacts to Highway 58 or to travel in the Oakridge area. Forest Road 21 remains open. See map for closure details:

Oakridge Airport Closure: The Oakridge airport is closed to civilian aircraft and a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) is in effect due to fire related helicopter traffic.
