8/10/2014 Bald Sisters Fire Update

Acres: 875                               Start date:  August 2, 2014

Cause:  Lightning                    Location: 12 Miles East of Prairie City, OR
Containment: 0%                    Fuels: Timber
Terrain: Steep, Rugged          Resources: 5 Crews, 11 Engines, 5 Dozers, 3 Tenders
Total personnel: 264               Helicopters: 1

Summary: Favorable weather conditions allowed crews to prepare indirect fire line. Construction of fireline continued on the west, south, and east sides of the fire, while scouting for containment occurred on the northern edge.

Today, crews will continue to improve the fireline along Forest Road 2652 east of the fire, felling trees and removing brush along the line.  Firefighters and dozers will begin work to tie this line into the line along the Forest Road 13. An easterly wind today is predicted, potentially helping slow the growth of the fire.

A Red Flag warning, an alert of imminent or ongoing critical fire weather, is in effect from 1 pm this afternoon through Tuesday, August 12. Conditions in the area will be ideal for wildfires due to thunderstorms. Lightning presents a major risk to firefighters working on ridge tops.  Thunderstorms also present the possibility of strong, erratic winds intensifying fire behavior and moving the fire in any direction.  Firefighters must be aware of these additional risks.

Closures of roads in the vicinity of the fire remain in effect.  For information on these closures refer to http://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/malheur/alerts-notices/?aid=24329.

While the Bald Sisters Fire presents no threat to structures, awareness of the fire danger and home protection is heightened at this time.  For information on defensible space and actions you should take to protect your property, please refer to the www.firewise.org, www.wildlandfirersg.org, and www.livingwithfire.info.
