8/9/2014 AM Chiwaukum Complex

Pacific Northwest Incident Management Team 2 (PNW2), Chris Schulte, Incident Commander, took command of the Chiwaukum Complex fires on Friday, August 8th at 6:00 p.m.

The Chiwaukum Complex includes the Chiwaukum, Shoofly, Mills Canyon, Kelly Mountain, and Alpine Fires.  PNW2 is also managing the Duncan and Hansel Creek fires.

Fire personnel assigned to the Chiwaukum Complex are assisting local units with initial attack on multiple fires.  Aerial observation continues on the Mills Canyon and Kelly Mountain fires which have both reached 100% containment.

The Hansel Creek Fire experienced torching and spotting on the south and west sides on Friday.  Aviation assets worked with crews to establish containment lines and structure protection for homes in the Hansel Creek area.  The fire is in steep and rugged terrain and remains north of Ingall Creek Trail.

Duncan Fire crews will continue to construct control line from Shady Pass to the Entitat River today with the intent of conducting firing operations within a couple of days to hold the fire at Shady Pass Road.
The Shoofly Fire is burning in steep, difficult terrain with heavy fuels approximately 10 miles up the Little Wenatchee River drainage.  The fire was relatively inactive on Friday and remained at 55 acres.
On the Chiwaukum Creek Fire rehabilitation of the fire lines and back-hauling of excess equipment will continue on Saturday.  Active fire remains within the interior of the fire perimeter.

Weather:  High pressure will dominate the fire complex Saturday with light winds, warmer temperatures and minimum relative humidities.  Increased fire activity is expected today which means smoke columns will be visible in the afternoon.  Terrain driven winds are expected, increasing fire activity. These light winds and a surface inversion will cause smoke to lower into the valley floors this evening.
