07/25/2014 FINAL Update Sunflower fire

FINAL UPDATE

Summary:  Post-fire activity continues as firefighters make excellent progress securing the last remaining segments of containment line, removing snags, backhauling supplies, repairing dozer lines and other fire suppression damage.

Current Situation:  The Incident Management Team will transition to a Type 3 organizationSaturday, July 26. The smaller organization will secure the remaining containment lines and complete restoration work. This may take some time as large trees and roots continue to burn in the interior of the fire.

The 13 acre spot fire, east of Indian Creek (FS Road 24), has been secured with handline and a hose lay. Crews found 3-4 “duffer” smokes on the interior yesterday but are expected to have the spot fully extinguished today.

This will be the final update from the Team.  Additional information may be obtained from the Umatilla National Forest by calling 541-278-3722. Fire information will continue to be posted to InciWeb.

Weather:  Cooler temperatures will again aid firefighters in their work today. A warming and drying trend will arrive over the weekend.

Area Fire Closures: As of Saturday, a smaller, new area closure will go into effect to keep traffic away from areas where firefighters continue to work.  Forest Road 22 (Top Road) will open. Please be careful when traveling these newly open roads.  The area closure order will be updated and announced at http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/3964/
